We've had some time to settle into our new lives in Savannah since the big move last July from Miami. A move that was met with equal parts derision and applause. There was the one camp that expressed concern that maybe we hadn't thought this change out too well, considering the economy and all. There was the other camp, though, that exclaimed us brave and Bohemian.
We simply felt there was no choice but to follow our hearts' deepest longings. Instead of asking "How do we do this?" we asked, "How can we not?"
After more years of playing by the rules than I care to count, rules that prescribed saving accounts, health insurance, steady nine-to-fives, lovely manners, and a presumed level of security, we watched our parents find out that these rules simply created artifice rather than reality. Brian's dad died from complications caused by Alzheimer's disease, a tragic diagnosis that robbed him of enjoying the spoils of his labors. My father - a late bloomer extraordinaire - finally found his place in this world, and thrived, only to be cut down by a rare disorder that has left him vegetative and living out whatever time he has left in a nursing home.
These are the times where you ask, "What is my lesson in this?"
I've always been a quick study, but a slow one to move. Until now.
So here we are pursuing creative lives. I've returned to school, working on an MFA in writing from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Brian has immersed himself in all things old and interesting, growing his antique business. I've never seen him happier, and I've never felt more alive - and we've never had less money.
The old Proverb calls us to "bloom where you are planted." This blog will chronicle that journey from seedling to perennial flowering.
Stay tuned.

HI Amy- this is a great blog. We found it by googling your name as we are interested in following up on some work you did with Palmetto Bay several years ago when you were at TPL. Jack sent an email to you about this. In the meantime, an update on this blog would be interesting! Hope all is well- Pam
